How the Universe Surprised Me

bethanys childrens home in india pays it forward

You’ll never guess how the universe reached out to me in an incredible way.

No, seriously. You’ll never guess, so I’ll tell you:

I went to the post office to get my mail the day before my birthday and there was this package from India. Inside were 20 hand-drawn images from children who live in a children’s home in India. These kids are sent to this particular school because their families live too far away for them to attend school. So at Bethany Children’s Home in Madurai, India, these children can attend school and have access to food, water, and better shelter.

So how did they find me and why did they approach me? I wrote a little about this surprising story on my blog at Sara Zimmerman Art, Illustration & Design.

Can you draw me as a web mascot or avatar?

custom illustration and hand drawn design for marketing and branding

Why yes! I totally can draw you as a custom comic, mascot or avatar. In fact, this is something I do as part of my day job at Sara Zimmerman Art, Illustration and Design. I can draw you:

  • as a cartoon character to be used on your website
  • as a superhero for an avatar for social media
  • into a comic for use in a business presentation or marketing materials
  • with Marilyn Earth in a setting of your liking

These custom illustrations come with two fees: an initial drawing fee and then a licensing fee. If you are interested in learning more, contact me with the following info:

  • what you want to be drawn as
  • what the intended use will be
  • if on web only, or to be used outside of the web, such as in a presentation or in print material
  • the duration of time you would like to buy licensing for

Here are some of my custom illustration projects:

2 Year Comic Anniversary

Unearthed Comics 2 year anniversary

Unearthed Comics 2 year anniversary

I started Unearthed Comics in November 2012. It’s now been 2 years and I’m excited to celebrate Unearthed Comics’ 2 year anniversary! Yay!

Creating comics has taught me a lot and I love using benchmarks, like anniversaries, as a time to reflect. I’ve learned:

  • how to have a thicker skin in terms of trolls and receiving negative comments. This new trait has helped me to stay true to my heart and not waiver from my goal of becoming a full-time cartoonist and writer despite what critics say.
  • to write EVERYTHING that brings even the slightest giggle down. I have notes everywhere and they help provide me fodder when I am busy and don’t have the time to come up with something last minute.
  • that if you have something going on, that there is a good chance that there is at least one person out there that can relate. Even though we may not connect with everyone, we’re not alone in how we feel or what we experience. Having fans all over the world who relate to my humor reiterates this.
  • that each comic artist is just one person who is part of a larger movement of trying to bring humor and positivity to the world through the internet and other media. I am so grateful for being part of this amazing group of people.
  • that there are some incredible people out there. Thank you to all of you who continue to donate (even $2 a month helps!) and who purchase my books.

I’m so grateful for all of my fans and for all of the people who share my comics (especially those who properly share them with credit and link). Thank you for your support and looking forward to another year of comics.

Top 10 Social Media Cartoons from Unearthed Comics

internet cartoon about social media and trolls on the internet

With nearly one in four people in the world using social media [source: eMarketer.com], you can bet that most people you know are using one platform or another. With that said, the 25% of the population who regularly visits Facebook or tweet on Twitter can relate to trolls, hashtag overuse, and waiting for external validation through “likes” and “retweets.” With such endless fodder that the social media world provides, I am constantly coming up with cartoons about social media and its absurdities. Since I have quite a few comics, I’ve decided to compile a collection of my favorite social media cartoons for you:

Top 10 Social Media Cartoons from Unearthed Comics

Made the Top 50 Web Design Comics List

Work cartoon comics about business humor and work humor

I love lists. They make me feel organized. But you know what type of lists I love the most? “Top” or “best” lists that include me or my comics. That’s a huge stroke for my ego and it feels pretty rad.

These guys over at Digital Synopsis found one of my first comics and included me in their “50 Funny Comics And Images That Web Designers And Developers Will Relate To.” Check me out at #44, (which also happens to be one of my favorite numbers).

BTW: I’m on iFunny thanks to my buddy https://twitter.com/OfficialHalt who manages my iFunny account for me. I am so grateful!!!

And, the super cool thing that made my day yesterday was finding out that I got 115,000+ smiley faces on iFunny for my “Tree Masterpiece” comic. That’s a lot of smiles. http://ifunny.co/fun/w9bzdPXG3.

Interviewed by Things In Squares

I had the lovely honor of being interviewed by Cale over at Things in Squares. I usually hide behind my comics so this was an exciting opportunity for me to practice talking about my webcomic experience to the public. If you’re interested in what made me start Unearthed Comics, the history behind the name, my process, my nervousness in front of cameras (and CNN), and why I love raptors, check it out>>>

Unearthed Hits 100,000

Woo-hoo! Yep, that’s the sound of a party. And, by that, I mean the sound of me dancing for hitting the 100,000 mark on Facebook. That feels nice and yummy to have that love and support from my fans worldwide. I am so grateful for your all. Thank you, thank you!

So, what’s next? Well, hitting benchmarks like that doesn’t really “do” anything. No music plays nor streamers come out of the sky (but it does in my head so right now, it feels like a wonderful party). However, it does give me more enthusiasm to keep on my crusade of bringing humor into the world. While I’ll continue to create comics regularly, I am also hoping to find an incredibly talented agent that wants to help introduce me and my bazillion project ideas to a wonderful publisher. That, plus climb some more and eat more dark chocolate.

Thanks again for the love and support. I am forever grateful!

I just put up some new tee designs in my new TeePublic store. The exciting part: they’re only $14 until the end of the day on 11/15/15. Money raised from t-shirt sales helps keep these comics going by way of me buying more dark chocolate (which keeps me awake and inspired!).

Marilyn Earth Goes to School

A few weeks ago, I had the greatest time volunteering at my daughter’s second grade classroom. I brought in some Unearthed Comic books and talked to them about what it is I do (omitting how I curse when I stare at blank pieces of paper). I walked through my books, showing them about how to formulate a comic.

Unearthed Comics at school

Then, I had all of the kids practice the sketching process of:

  1. sketch lightly in pencil
  2. ink over the light pencil
  3. erase the light pencil, leaving the ink behind

This is always my favorite thing to teach because it proves that mistakes are allowed (and shows that everyone makes them).

The next thing we did is draw faces. I found some silly facial expression chart on the internet, but only realized once it was up on the screen that some of the comments below the faces were not school-appropriate. So I was able to practice some quick-thinking and inking, and the teacher and I blacked-out those asterisks and such.

After that, we started assigning human personalities to inanimate objects. We started with a window. Some of the comments blew my mind, such as “Dear window, why are you in such pane?” (Puns and second graders go well together, BTW). Here are some of their works:

Unearthed-class-1512-1-drawing2

We ended the session with me talking about how I use comics to get out my emotions. Sometimes they aren’t funny at all and I have to work through them. But, that is also the process of life with difficult things.

All in all, it was a fun time and I hope they’ll invite me back.

Unearthed Comics on Patreon

Yes, Unearthed Comics is now up on Patreon. What’s Patreon, you ask?

  • Patreon is like an on-going Kickstarter campaign where you can set a monthly donation of $1 and up.
  • My content will still be free; I’m just asking for help from you so I can put more time into comic creation and projects.
  • Patrons will get a little bonus of patron-only posts and goodies.

The money raised through Patreon will help me buy comic making supplies, pay website hosting and related fees, and help me pay other bills so I’m able to focus on Unearthed-related projects and not have to take on as many additional design projects. Even a dollar or two per month helps keep my comic alive. Plus, patrons will receive fun rewards, too.

Support Sara Now>>>

I’m so grateful for all of my fans because you add so much more to my comic and writing experience. A big thanks to all of my Unearthed supporters and I look forward to creating more for you!

Cracked Eye Interview

Interview with Cracked EyeThe kind folks over at Cracked Eye, a UK-based online magazine, interviewed me about my comics. Doing interviews is fun because it forces me to really think about why I am creating, how I am creating, and makes me dive into the process.  Plus, it allows me a little time to talk and write (which, as my family and friends know, I love to do).

In this interview, I talk about my goals in trying to create the “positive” out of the “frustrating,” my process in creating this “flip,” as well as my background, how I got started, etc.
