Unearthed Comics Makes Huffington Post

Thank you to Huffington Post Parents for featuring 17 of my parenting comics in a recent article called 17 Comics That Show What Stressed-Out Parents Are Really Thinking. Along with it is a nice mini interview about my interesting parenting perspective. The best part about this is that I had forgotten about some of these comics since I did them so long ago. Ha! Read the 17 parenting comics and then hit “like” or make a lovely comment or something to let them know if you relate to these parenting comics. Thanks!

April Fools!

What? You mean to say there are others who stole my idea for an April Fools’ Day comic? OMG! I’m going to sue!

Just kidding! A bunch of us cartoonists grouped together weeks ago conspiring some internet topsyturvy, each creating the same comic in our own style, then accusing each other of plagiarism. Thank you to my fans who stood up for me and had fun perpetuated this internet mayhem!

  • Here’s more from Rock Paper Cynic on how it happened >>> http://rockpapercynic.tumblr.com/post/142073618449/april-fools

For the last 6 years, my husband and I have been major sponsors of the Tahoe Truckee Earth Day event in the Lake Tahoe area of California. We’re happy to do it again, this time celebrating Unearthed Comics!

Tahoe Truckee Earth Day is a free, family-friendly event promoting eco-awareness located in the stunning setting of Squaw Valley. There will be booths, music and a raffle. Best of all, I’m going to be there giving away stickers and high-fives, as well as wanting to meet any fans that are coming by. So if you are in the Lake Tahoe, USA area on April 16th, 2016, please look for me*. You’ll hear my name announced (Sara Zimmerman) but I will be at my Unearthed Comics’ booth. See you there!*

Dear Unearthed – Where did Marilyn Earth Get Her Name?

Dear Unearthed Comics:

Where did Marilyn Earth get her name?

~ Andrea W.

Dear Andrea:

Thanks for the question! I started Unearthed Comics in 2012 with the Earth as my main character. I have a degree in Environmental Studies so thought that having the Earth as my main protagonist would allow me to discuss several environmental issues that I wanted to bring to light (as well as silly science puns). I started off by drawing her sometimes naked and sometimes having a little apron on (see below):

Unearthed-RevolvesAroundYou-1511-1-web

In 2013, I was creating a series of Earth-related comics for Earth Day and had just seen something about the actress, Marilyn Monroe. I decided to draw out my Earth with Marilyn Monroe’s famous scene of her on top of an air vent, adorning her with Marilyn’s flowing dress (see below):where did marilyn earth get her name

For some reason, it just clicked for me. So that’s where Marilyn Earth got not only her name, but her outfit, too.*

(*However, unlike Marilyn Monroe, the Earth’s dress is made completely out of clouds).

Unearthed Comics Marilyn Earth at Earth Day Festival

Thank you to everyone who made it out to the Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival this past weekend. It was so much fun! I’ve posted some photos and the drawings my visitors made when asked “What is your favorite way to celebrate the Earth?” to my Facebook page. Check them out here>>>

And a GIANT thank you to all my donors and patrons who are helping me to buy stickers, booth materials, etc. I still need all the help I can get, but thank you all who have supported me and my efforts. (If you would like to help me, please make either a one-time or ongoing pledge here >>>).

Thanks!

Dear Unearthed: Questions From Survey Winner 2

Unearthed Comics Marilyn Earth Hugging Moon

As part of my 2016 Fan Survey, 2 winners got to ask me 3 questions about Unearthed Comics. The first set of questions was published here. The following are the second set of questions asked by Lucia:

  1. Q. How much does the Moon like selenologists?

    1. A. Moon REALLY likes attention, whether it is from Earth, Sun, or selenologists. (In other words, please keep looking at the moon at night).
  2. Q. What are your 3 favorite science books?

    1. A. To be totally honest, I haven’t read a true “science” book in ages. I read a ton in college for my Environmental Studies degree and continue to use several reference books for drawing, comics, painting, etc. Instead of actual text books, I often turn to blogs for more science-related information since they are updated frequently (and are gentle on my book budget).
  3. Q. What does Marilyn Earth think about climate change?

    1. A. You know when you’re not exactly sure what’s wrong with you, but you can tell something is off? Well, Marilyn Earth is no dummy and she is sensing something is weird with her climate. She doesn’t like the hot flashes (I mean, what woman does?). So it’s up to us to label it and do our part to offset whatever else we’re doing that doesn’t feel in alignment. We can all do something to offset our carbon footprint regardless of whether it’s called “Climate Chang,” “Global Warming” or “Earth’s Meltdown,” etc. Just trying to do a little each day can have a huge impact.

Upworthy, which is one of my favorite uplifting websites with over 9 million social media followers, just featured my “Being Inspired” illustrated article. Woo-hoo!

Besides creating just comics, writing alongside my comics is one of my favorite ways to express myself (that, and painting, drumming, talking really loud and being silly…). Check out the feature-length article “Learn just how far a bit of inspiration can take you.” (Thanks, Upworthy!).

I was commissioned by Upworthy to write a thank-you letter to my husband about being a stay-at-home-dad. This was a great exercise for me which required me to jump back in time to recall all the things that happened when we were new parents. It made me excited to revisit all that my husband had did to make this transition into parenting so great as well as the amazing effort he has continued to put in towards being a great father.

With the article are 4 comics that sum up some of his experiences. Read it here>>>

Sometimes the negative things in life can feel overwhelming. Yet, with patience and acceptance, we can find new ways to work with what has been given to us. Often, when we do just that and surrender to accept what is, we receive more from the circumstance than we previously expected. It’s all about riding the wave.

Unearthed Comics at San Diego Comic Con

San Diego Comic Con 2016 was an incredible experience! Though I did not have a booth, I chose to walk the floor with my awesome husband and daughter to witness how the chaos and loveliness wove together.

While there, I hooked up with The Awkward Yeti, Gemma Correll, Maria Scrivan and The Oatmeal. On day two, instead of prolonging the exposure to the hundreds of thousands of people, I took The Awkward Yeti and The Oatmeal out to surf. Below is a comic I made to commemorate our surfing experience in San Diego. I have several photos of the actual comic convention up on my Unearthed Comics’ Facebook page and have added a couple to Instagram as well (so check those out!).

Boston COmic Con webcomic crew 2016

Well, let’s just say I had an incredible blast meeting a giant handful of webcomic artists who I had be communicating with through the years. It was magical to finally meet so many of these people whom I dearly respect face to face. We had a giant booth castle sponsored by Webtoons, along with a poster which fans could jump from artist to artist obtaining autographs. We giggled hard and played harder… some of these peeps are just truly amazing. Check out several of my Boston photos up on Facebook and be sure to hunt down some of these great comics if you are looking to increase the humor in your life!
